Script Writing: Motivational Speech

Coach Maurice Livingston, head coach of the Los Angeles Lightning, stands in the

center of the locker room holding a football like a newborn baby in his left arm.

The team is trailing in the World Championship Game at halftime, 26-3.

Most of the players sit in chairs surrounding the coach. Other players stand outside the circle with the coaching staff.

Everyone looks sad and dejected awaiting the words from their coach. Everyone...except Coach Livingston.

COACH LIVINGSTON

(measured, fatherly tone)

Let's take a moment to come to grips with the fact that we're losing this game.

This world championship game.

As a former player myself, I share your pain and frustration.

I share the agony of feeling this game is out of our hands and unwinnable.

This is not how we practiced or prepared to play this game.

COACH LIVINGSTON

(sarcastically)

Who draws up plans for a "pick 6" on back-to-back possessions

and a fumble loss for another touchdown?

COACH LIVINGSTON

(serious)

No one. That's who? But that's all behind us.

As I said before, I share your pain, but NOW I want you all to share MY optimism.

Now we have a chance to adjust and bring the title home to L.A.

I want you to share my confidence in ALL OF YOU(pointing around the circle)to execute our plan.

I'm not gonna waste a single breath on the mistakes made by individuals

because we got here as a team.

We can lose as a team, but that's not gonna happen...NOT tonight!

COACH LIVINGSTON

(determined)

We are the United States Champion Los Angeles Lightning!

We didn't get this far by taking lumps and giving up.

We got this far taking lumps and returning to the line ready for the next play.

Ready to give them what they just gave us...only we give it back ten-fold!

ALL

(applause)

YEAH! That's right, Coach!

(Coach Livingston pauses to observe the mindset in the room change)

COACH LIVINGSTON

You don't need perfection out there, you just need to PERFORM and EXECUTE!

We need to bring the storm to the stadium! It's time for the Lightning TO WHAT?

ALL

STRIKE!

COACH LIVINGSTON

(shouts, arm in "fist pump" position)

TO WHAT?

ALL

STRIKE!

COACH LIVINGSTON

TO WHAT?

ALL

STRIKE!

The entire locker room cheers, whistles, and claps after the speech.

COACH LIVINGSTON

(jokingly)

All right, keep it down before the players association gets the wrong idea.
